Asiad 2026 quarterfinal: South Korea U23's twelve new faces against Vietnam U23 and the January shootout memory

At minute 27, Lee Gi Hyuk went down. His shin met the studs of a Saudi Arabian player, the ball had already gone, the referee waved play on. He stayed down for about three seconds. Then he got up, walked it off, and finished the match. South Korea's U23 won 2-0, topped Group D, and almost every line written afterwards mentioned only the two goals.

I was sitting in Busan, more than eight thousand kilometres from that pitch, and I still remember those three seconds. In a match South Korea controlled almost completely, the most memorable moment was a centre-back deciding not to stay down. That kind of detail never appears in a stats sheet, and it is the kind of detail a team can lose in a week.

At 17:30 on 25 September in Japan, South Korea's U23 face Vietnam's U23 in the men's football quarterfinal at the 2026 Asian Games. I believe Lee Gi Hyuk's bruised shin will be one of two things that decide this match. The other lies in January.

The January memory

In January 2026, at the AFC U23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, South Korea's U23 lost to Vietnam's U23 6-7 on penalties, after the two sides drew 2-2 over 120 minutes, in the third-place match. That is a harder defeat to swallow than a heavy loss. You have more of the ball, you create more chances, and you are still dragged into a game in which defenders are not allowed to use their hands.

Eight months later, the two teams have moved in opposite directions.

South Korea's U23 added nine players currently playing in Europe and three overage players. Twelve new faces compared with the January core. With that squad, Lee Min Sung's side beat Qatar's U23 4-1 and Saudi Arabia's U23 2-0, reaching the quarterfinals as winners of Group D.

Vietnam's U23 have lost Đình Bắc and several key defenders. Coach Kim Sang Sik is not on the bench. On paper, the gap between the two teams has widened in a way nobody dared write eight months ago.

And it is the Koreans who said it out loud first.

"Vietnam's U23 have just suffered a defeat to Uzbekistan's U23. So they will come into the quarterfinal with very high determination. Therefore, I reminded my teammates not to be careless and to maintain high focus at all times," captain Lee Gi Hyuk told The Chosun.

Sports Hankook warned plainly: "Although coach Kim Sang Sik is not on the Vietnam U23 bench, South Korea's U23 must absolutely not be complacent." In the same piece, they called pragmatic defending, fierce pressing in midfield and quick counterattacks into the spaces on the flanks Vietnam's "weapons", then added a line I read again and again: "The scariest thing about them is not the names of their players, but their durable physical foundation and the mentality of having nothing to lose."

Koreans understand this better than anyone. Because they were once the team with nothing to lose.

Twelve new pieces and what they cost

This is where I want to stop for a moment, because almost every preview stops at "South Korea are much stronger" and moves on.

Adding nine European-based players and three overage players makes South Korea's U23 stronger, and it also makes them different. A football team is a system of habits. When you change more than half the side, you are not adding quality to an old system. You are building a new system inside the window of a short tournament.

European-based players bring very specific things: ball-handling at speed, the ability to survive pressing in tight spaces, decisions made half a second faster. They also bring something harder to see: men used to being understood by teammates without a gesture. At club level they play beside each other every week. Here, they train together a handful of sessions.

Add three overage players. At the Asian Games, the overage slot is a powerful but blunt tool. It gives you a grown man in a dressing room of twenty-year-olds. It also creates a hierarchy the team must accept inside two weeks.

Lee Gi Hyuk embodies both sides of that. He plays for Gangwon FC and can fill in at centre-back or defensive midfield. That versatility is a tactical gift: the same man lets Lee Min Sung switch from a back four to a back three without a substitution. But that versatility is also a signal. A team that needs a centre-back who can play defensive midfield is a team that has not decided how it wants to play.

Minute 27 and the fitness problem

The rhythm of a tournament like the Asian Games is punishing in a different way to a domestic league. A game every three days, travel between cities, different pitches, different weather. The staff that rotate well go far; the staff that depend on eleven names pay for it in extra time.

The collision in the 27th minute against Saudi Arabia's U23 was not an isolated incident. It is an indicator of the frequency of contact a centre-back absorbs when his team plays a high line and leaves gaps in midfield. On every counterattack, the centre-back is the one running back, and usually the one diving in.

Lee Gi Hyuk finished that match, and according to The Chosun he is fully available for the Vietnam game. But I have watched enough matches at this level to know that "available" and "able to perform at his best" are two different sentences. A centre-back who loses half a step in the 65th minute becomes a hole in the 85th.

That is where Vietnam's U23 will look.

Vietnam's real weapon is not in the names

Based on my experience following these matches, I have recognised a very clear pattern in Asian youth football. Southeast Asian teams that want to beat stronger teams do not win by playing better. They win by making the game short.

Specifically: drop the defensive block, force the opponent wide, and turn every midfield turnover into a race towards the opposite goal. Sports Hankook described exactly that: pragmatic defending, fierce pressing in midfield, quick counterattacks into the spaces on the flanks.

This style has a cruel logic. It accepts that the opponent will have the ball 60-65% of the time. It accepts that the opponent will take 15-18 shots. It asks only one thing: that most of those 15 shots come from outside the box and from bad angles.

South Korea's U23 beat Qatar's U23 4-1 and Saudi Arabia's U23 2-0. Both matches shared one thing: their opponents wanted to play. Qatar and Saudi Arabia both tried to build from the back, both pushed their full-backs high, both left the spaces in behind that a team with twelve new faces in the attacking third can exploit. That is the kind of match South Korea's U23 were born to win.

Vietnam's U23 will not play like Qatar. Vietnam's U23 will not play like Saudi Arabia. Vietnam's U23 will play the way they played in Saudi Arabia in January, when they held 2-2 for 120 minutes against exactly this opponent.

And this is the point I believe matters most in the whole tie: South Korea's U23 have not yet proved in this tournament that they can break a low block in open play. Four goals against Qatar and two against Saudi Arabia came in matches where the opponent opened up. Against a closed defence, they will have to answer a question they have not been asked at the 2026 Asian Games.

On Đình Bắc and the player-shaped hole

Đình Bắc's absence is usually described as a loss. I am not sure that is the right description.

There are stars that only burn where they are loved, not where the lights are brightest. In a defend-and-counter system, an outstanding individual attacker can be a gift or a trap. The gift is that he can create a goal out of nothing. The trap is that the rest of the team starts waiting for it, and changes how it plays to serve him.

When you lose the man who can create a goal out of nothing, a counterattacking team often becomes more uniform, more disciplined and more unpleasant to play against. They lose an easy escape route.

I cannot be sure this is true of Vietnam's U23 at the 2026 Asian Games. But I have seen it be true many times. And I think it deserves saying, because it runs against the story being told.

What worries me more is the defence. Losing key defenders cannot be compensated for. A defensive system runs on understanding, on knowing where a teammate will be before he gets there. You cannot train that in three days.

Where I could be wrong

I write against the wind, but my heart never turns against football. Which means I have to name the places where my argument could collapse.

First, the gap in individual quality may be so large that all tactical analysis becomes meaningless. Nine European-based players bring speed, fitness and moments no system can defend. If South Korea's U23 score inside 20 minutes, Vietnam's whole plan has to be rewritten, and when a counterattacking team is forced to open up, it usually falls apart quickly.

Second, the January memory may be a cognitive trap. A third-place match is a match where both teams have already lost their biggest goal. People say third-place games are "easy to play", but I have always found them the most unpredictable match of any tournament, because they lack the pressure that makes teams look like themselves. I cannot be sure January says anything about September.

Third, I may be reading too much tactical meaning into a team whose problem is simply personnel. When your captain has to cover two positions, that can be flexibility. It can also be indecision. I am not close enough to know.

What I will put a stake on

South Korea beat Germany in Kazan in 2026, the coffee shop in Busan went silent, and I cried for the immortality of football. I remember that feeling very clearly. A team with nothing to lose stood in front of a team afraid of losing everything, and the fear lost in a strange, inverted way. On the afternoon of 25 September, the roles have flipped. The Koreans are now the team on the summit. Vietnam's U23 are the team with nothing to lose. And their captain said it out loud in the dressing room, as if naming the wolf so it would not come.

I do not write to be agreed with. I write to wake a question that has fallen asleep. South Korea's U23 do not need to win beautifully to go through. They only need to avoid the exact mistake they made in January: letting the match live to the 90th minute.

If South Korea's U23 score before the 30th minute, I believe the tie ends early and possibly heavily. If they do not, I will guess this match goes to extra time, and I will be sitting in Busan again, looking out of the window, wondering why we keep calling football a game of eleven players when it has always been a game of eleven people trying to find somewhere they belong.
