Hugo Gonzalez, a 27-year-old Spanish swimmer, has made a significant mark by breaking the national record in the 100-meter individual medley (short course 25m) with a time of 51.46 seconds at the Jose Finkel Trophy held in São Paulo, Brazil. This performance was 0.04 seconds faster than the previous record of 51.50 seconds set by Carles Coll at the 2026 Short Course World Championships. With this swim, Gonzalez has officially secured his qualification for this year's Short Course World Championships. The former University of California, Berkeley swimmer, now representing Minas Tenis Club, delivered this impressive performance while setting a total of 5 new personal bests (PBs) throughout the competition. In the record-breaking race, Gonzalez's split times were 10.68 seconds for the opening 25m, 12.80 seconds for the next segment, 15.20 seconds for the breaststroke leg, with a strong finish of 12.78 seconds for the final 25m. The data indicates a powerful finishing ability in the latter stage of the race – a critical factor that can make a difference in continental and world-level competitions. Earlier, Gonzalez earned a silver medal in the 200m individual medley at this year's European Championships.
