Olympiacos Land in Cyprus: Vezenkov Returns, Bartzokas Signals Rotation Readiness Ahead of Super Cup

Olympiacos have landed in Cyprus with nearly a full-strength squad, as Sasha Vezenkov and Kostas Papanikolaou return to action after sitting out the previous friendly tournament in Crete. The Greek giants face Red Star Belgrade, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and domestic rival Aris in a four-team preseason event. Head coach Georgios Bartzokas used the Crete tournament to test bench depth, and now in Cyprus he can reintegrate his two starting forwards. Vezenkov’s return is especially critical: the Bulgarian forward is the team’s primary scoring weapon, while Papanikolaou provides defensive versatility and leadership. The only major absentee is center Tyrique Jones, who underwent minor surgery to remove a cyst from his right thigh. According to the team, Jones is “rushing” to be fit for the Greek Super Cup on September 18–19. In a revealing interview with Eurohoops, Bartzokas lamented the departure of Thomas Walkup: “I wanted Walkup to continue. At Olympiacos, you can go from Messiah to… irrelevant in one season.” This comment exposes tension between the coach and front office over player retention. Soon after, Vezenkov countered with a team-first message: “I build my legacy with Olympiacos titles, not with MVPs.” The narrative management is deliberate, but overall the locker room appears stable. Aris, coached by legend Vassilis Spanoulis, is missing four key players—Adam Mokoka, Stelios Poulianitis, Georgios Tanoulis (injured), and Stefan Jovic (ill)—meaning their first major preseason test is compromised. This makes evaluating Spanoulis’s early system unreliable. Preseason friendlies carry near-zero predictive value for the regular season.
